Japan-ROK Summit Meeting (Summary)

On July 10, commencing at 5:35 p.m. (local time. 6:35 a.m. on July 11, Japan time) for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan held a Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. YOON Suk Yeol, President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) during his visit to Washington D.C, the United States, for the NATO Summit. The summary of the bilateral meeting is as follows.
- Prime Minister Kishida stated that he was delighted to see President YOON again soon after their last meeting in Seoul, which is still fresh in his memory. He also mentioned that under the current international situation, it is meaningful for the two leaders to exchange views and coordinate closely with each other, based on the foundation of their firm trust and shared strategic perspectives.
- The two leaders welcomed the continued active communication between the two governments in a range of fields, and affirmed to leverage such actions to further elevate the bilateral relationship to new heights towards the next year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the Japan-ROK relations.
- The two leaders shared the view that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific are inseparable, and concurred to further deepen coordination between NATO and Indo-Pacific partners.
- The two leaders had a candid exchange of views especially on the recent security issues, including the situation in North Korea. Prime Minister Kishida stressed that Japan is seriously concerned about the outcome of the Russia-North Korea Summit Meeting in terms of its impact on the regional security surrounding Japan. Both leaders concurred on the necessity to continue to coordinate closely among Japan, the U.S. and the ROK under the Spirit of Camp David.
