Prime Minister Kishida's visit to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (Summary)

On May 1, commencing at 4:15 p.m. local time (1:15 a.m. on May 2, JST) for approximately 25 minutes, Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio, visiting Ghana, called on the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
 
During the visit, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he was proud that the institute had played a major role during the COVID-19 pandemic, saving many lives not only in Ghana but also in West Africa. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that Japan will continue to contribute to combat infectious diseases through working with the institute in order to promote Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

It was established in 1979 with Japanese grant aid. Japanese technical cooperation is provided through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and other agencies, and exchanges between researchers are on-going till today. This institute plays an important role as a regional center for combating infectious diseases in West Africa and is a symbol of cooperation between Japan and Ghana.
