Japan-Brunei Summit Meeting (Overview)

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held a meeting with His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on November 19 (Monday) for approximately 25 minutes from around 3:40 p.m. (local time) during his visit to Cambodia to attend the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister Noda conveyed his congratulations on the marriage of Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Hafizah Sururul Bolkiah, his fourth daughter, in September, and expressed gratitude for Brunei's assistance following the Great East Japan Earthquake, including relief money and emergency supply of LNG.
- Both leaders shared the view that both countries would further strengthen the relations between the two countries, taking advantage of the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation next year under Brunei's ASEAN chairmanship, and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Japan and Brunei in 2014. They also confirmed that both countries would further develop their mutually beneficial economic relationship by promoting the industry diversification and job creation in Brunei, among other measures.
- As for ASEAN-related issues, Prime Minister Noda stated that Japan would support the ASEAN's efforts to build an ASEAN Community in 2015 and promote concrete cooperations, including the strengthening of ASEAN connectivity, disaster prevention and youth exchanges; and Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Bolkiah welcomed this. Both leaders shared the recognition that the two countries would cooperate in further strengthening Japan-ASEAN relations on the occasion of the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation next year, as confirmed at the Japan-ASEAN Summit Meeting. The two leaders also affirmed their cooperation toward the success of the East Asia Summit Meeting to be held the next day, November 20.
- The two leaders exchanged views on international affairs, including Japan-China relations, and shared the view that Japan and Brunei would further strengthen their friendly relationship.
