Japan-Bangladesh Summit Meeting and Other Events
Monday, May 26, 2014
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held talks with H.E. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, at the Prime Minister's Office.
Afterwards, both leaders signed a Japan-Bangladesh Joint Statement, and then held a joint press announcement.
Later, the Prime Minister held a banquet inviting Prime Minister Hasina, among others.
The Prime Minister said in his address,
“I welcome Prime Minister Hasina on her third visit to Japan as Prime Minister.
It was just this last March when Minister for Foreign Affairs Kishida, who is present today, was dispatched to Bangladesh and communicated our invitation to visit Japan. I am extremely pleased to be able to meet you like this at such an early date.
Japan was swift to recognize Bangladesh upon its independence in 1971. In 1973, we welcomed Prime Minister Hasina’s father and then-Prime Minister, H.E. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Ever since then, Japan and Bangladesh have been constructing what has traditionally been an extremely good relationship.
With this visit to Japan by Prime Minister Hasina, we have for the first time established a comprehensive partnership. In doing so, I am confident that we have raised the bilateral relationship between Japan and Bangladesh to new heights.
Today, we have invited the Chair of the Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians League, Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, along with the league’s executive membership, members of the economic world who have long been involved in business with Bangladesh, and those involved in cultural exchanges. We have received the attendance of those with connections to Bangladesh.
I would like to raise a toast upon the visit of Prime Minister Hasina, to the further development of Japan-Bangladesh relations, and to the strengthening of the bonds that tie our two countries together.”
