Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the second meeting of the Information Security Policy Council in 2014 (39th in total) at the Prime Minister's Office.

During the meeting, discussion took place on an outline regarding strengthening the functions of Japan's cyber security promotion system, among other matters.

The Prime Minister said in his opening address,

"As threats in cyberspace become ever more sophisticated, ensuring cyber security is a critically important issue from the perspectives of national security and crisis management.
At the same time, it can be said that cyber security forms an essential foundation for 'becoming the world's leading IT society' – an important pillar of the Growth Strategy identified by the Abe administration.
Furthermore, Japan has an important duty to have a robust cyber security system in place for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
It will take time to make careful preparations. We must shift into full gear and make serious efforts, starting now, six years before the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Given these circumstances, the items that the Council will be discussing today are all important and urgent issues.
The Abe Cabinet will make even greater efforts than before to accelerate cyber security policy aimed at building a cyberspace that is 'world-leading,' 'resilient,' and 'vigorous.' Exercising political leadership and taking into consideration the discussions of the Council and the ruling parties, we will work to strengthen the Government's cyber security functions, including reviewing legislation, and make even more proactive efforts than ever before.
I look forward to your lively discussion."
