On Monday, July 9, H.E. Mr. Yoshihiko Noda, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting from 5:30 pm for approximately 30 minutes with H.E. Mr. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, who was on an official visit to Japan. The two leaders also exchanged views during a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Noda subsequently. An overview of the meeting is as follows:

1. At the beginning, Prime Minister Noda welcomed the success of the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan held on July 8, and stated that the Government of Japan will continue to provide its utmost support for Afghanistan's efforts towards sustainable economic growth during the Transformation Decade.
   
   
2. Furthermore, Prime Minister Noda stated that it is important for both sides to steadily follow commitments in accordance with the "Tokyo Mutual Accountability Framework (Tokyo Framework)". In this regard, Prime Minister Noda requested further efforts on the implementation of a free and fair Presidential election in 2014 and the early completion of prioritizing National Priority Programs.
   
   
3. In response, President Karzai expressed his gratitude for Japan's assistance to Afghanistan on behalf of the Government of Afghanistan and its people. President Karzai stated that he was confident about the success of the Tokyo Conference even before his coming to Tokyo, and that he was moved by Japan's commitment to continuing its support despite the Great East Japan Earthquake.
   
   
4. Moreover, President Karzai stated that improvement of governance and strengthening administrative organizations are important issues for Afghanistan, and from such a viewpoint, he met with Afghan administrative officials who were studying agriculture, engineering, communication, etc., in Japan when he had a meeting with H.E. Dr. Sadako Ogata, Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. President Karzai then requested Japan's support in these areas.
   
   
5. Prime Minister Noda expressed his gratitude for the support from the people of Afghanistan in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
   
   
6. In addition, the two leaders exchanged views on the security situation, the peace process, and regional cooperation in Afghanistan.
