Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda received a courtesy call from the representatives of the youths participating in the 38th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) at the Prime Minister's Office.

The SSEAYP was inaugurated in 1974 based on a joint statement between Japan and the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This year marks the 38th voyage.

After shaking hands with each of the representatives of the youths participating in the SSEAYP and giving words of encouragement to them, the Prime Minister gave an address, in which he said, "Japan is working to strengthen relations on both economic and cultural fronts with countries of the Asia-Pacific region, as we are members of the same region. What comprises the foundation of relations among nations is a solid relationship of trust nurtured by each of you.
Go ahead and use this precious opportunity to make as many friends as possible. They will be an invaluable asset for you. It is my expectation that you will be acting as a bridge connecting Asia-Pacific nations, and go beyond the borders in fulfilling your potential."
