Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held the sixth meeting of the Strategic Headquarters for Space Development at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, decisions were made on the basic approach to promoting the commercial quasi-zenith satellite system business and the creation of a structure to promote strategic development and use of space.

The Prime Minister said in his opening address, "Japan is capable to launch rockets and satellites on its own, has launching sites, and has succeeded at nurturing astronauts under international cooperation. In that sense, Japan has much latent potential in this area.
I want Japan to become a nation that is best suited for elucidating various mysteries of space and sensing the pulse of the Earth.
In this context, I believe that it is extremely important that the decision was made today to promote a quasi-zenith satellite system and consolidate various agencies which have hitherto been engaged with space into one body in order to create a structure for strategic promotion of space policy with clear priorities. I ask for your cooperation under this basic policy."
