Comment by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (on the Nuclear Test by North Korea)

January 6, 2016

[Provisional Translation]

REPORTER: North Korea has announced that it conducted its first test of a hydrogen bomb. Please tell us what the Japanese Government’s awareness of the situation is, and what responses it will take going forward.

PRIME MINISTER SHINZO ABE: The nuclear test that North Korea conducted today is totally unacceptable, as it constitutes a grave threat to Japan’s security. Japan strongly condemns this nuclear test.

The nuclear test is a clear violation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and represents a grave challenge to international efforts for nuclear non-proliferation.

Japan will take firm measures in coordination with the United States, the Republic of Korea, China, and Russia, including efforts in the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
