Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters
November 24, 2015
[Provisional Translation]
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting of the Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.
During the meeting, discussion took place on “policies related to the TPP in the intellectual property field.”
In his opening address, the Prime Minister said,
“The TPP is the trump card of our growth strategy, one that will create an open and dynamic economy . I hope that the establishment of a uniform set of rules for tackling counterfeit products, and other matters, in the intellectual property field, will promote the development of businesses that utilize intellectual property and stimulate innovation.
To that end, we will thoroughly advance the necessary preparations for establishing intellectual property systems for the implementation of the TPP. While doing so we will pay particular attention to copyrights and ensuring that derivative works are not diminished.
To develop new markets by utilizing the TPP, we will support the strengthening of the intellectual property strategy for small- and medium-sized enterprises, and the promotion of Japanese content overseas. Taking advantage of the impetus provided by the TPP, we will take steps to facilitate the smoother use of copyrighted works, such as by consolidating data on rights. In addition, we will advance discussions for strengthening the functioning of conflict resolution systems for protecting intellectual property.
Today you have compiled the policies related to the TPP in the intellectual property field and I would like to reflect them in the Comprehensive TPP-Related Policy Guidelines . Thank you.”
