Headquarters for Japan's Economic Revitalization
Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 12th meeting of the Headquarters for Japan's Economic Revitalization at the Prime Minister's Office.
During the meeting, discussion took place on the "Action Plan for Strengthening Industrial Competitiveness (draft)" and the "Review Guidelines for the Progress of the Growth Strategy (draft)."
Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said in his address,
"The special characteristics of the Abe Administration's Growth Strategy are 'action' and 'speed.' Following the approval of the Japan Revitalization Strategy in June of last year, we immediately passed nine bills related to the Growth Strategy in the extraordinary session of the Diet.
However, we must not stop here. The world is watching to see whether or not we can further accelerate the third arrow of Abenomics, break down barriers, and set the Japanese economy on a path to stable growth.
I would like the relevant ministers to steadily carry out Growth Strategy-related policies, on schedule and without omission, based on the 'Action Plan for Strengthening Industrial Competitiveness.'
During 'the Diet to Realize a Positive Cycle' that will go into session from next week, we will submit around 30 bills related to the Growth Strategy, far exceeding the number submitted during the extraordinary Diet session. I would like the relevant ministers to, in order to enact policies with even greater effectiveness, work towards putting those such policies into law.
The world demands further progress on structural reforms in Japan. In order to meet expectations at home and abroad for 'the sustainable growth of the Japanese economy even while the population shrinks,' we must carry out fundamental structural reforms.
In regard to the issues set out within the 'Review Guidelines for the Progress of the Growth Strategy' compiled by the Industrial Competitiveness Council, I want all of the relevant ministers to consult with Mr. Amari, the Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization, as you make considerations toward their realization.
I would like for the ministers themselves to exercise leadership, further consider positive initiatives, work toward the establishment of effective policies, and reflect the results of all of that within the revision of the Growth Strategy to take place in the middle of the year."
