Ceremony to Present the National Honor Award
Monday, February 25, 2013
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a ceremony to present the National Honor Award at the Prime Minister's Office to the late Mr. Koki Naya (former Yokozuna Taiho), and awarded the certificate of commendation, the shield and the commemorative gift.
The award was presented to honor the distinguished accomplishments of the late Mr. Koki Naya (former Yokozuna Taiho), who, through his dedicated efforts and discipline, left a remarkable record in the sumo world as one of the greatest Yokozunas of the Showa era by winning 32 makuuchi tournaments - the most in the history of sumo, as well as bringing society bright dreams, hopes, and courage as a nationally loved hero, admired by many Japanese people.
The National Honor Award was established in August 1977 to honor those persons, respected by a broad spectrum of the people, whose distinguished accomplishments have brought the light of hope to society.
