Prime Minister Kishida’s Visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) (Summary)

On April 30, commencing at 4:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Japan time), for approximately 90 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is on a visit to Egypt, paid a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), currently under preparation for its inauguration.

1. While being guided by H.E. Mr. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Dr. Mostafa Waziry, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, he observed the preparation status of the museum and saw the site of the restoration of the “Second Khufu Ship” located on the precincts of the museum, among other things. 

2. After the visit, Prime Minister Kishida, along with Prime Minister Madbouly, met with reporters, and stated the cultural significance of the museum and the financial and technical support Japan has provided to date toward its opening. Prime Minister Kishida also expressed Japan’s desire to continue to provide assistance toward the completion of the museum.
