Japan-France Summit Meeting

On June 26, commencing at 5:50 p.m. (local time; June 27, 0:50 a.m. JST) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Germany for the G7 Summit, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida stated that the security of Europe and Indo-Pacific region is indivisible and the bilateral cooperation between Japan and France as exceptional partners is becoming more important, and he hopes that France continues and enhances its engagement in the Indo-Pacific. In response, President Macron stated that he hopes to strategically deepen cooperation with Japan in a wide variety of fields including security and economy.
2. The two leaders confirmed that they would promote cooperation in a multi-layered manner in various fields including the Indo-Pacific, ocean, cyber, space and nuclear energy. Prime Minister Kishida reiterated request for France’s cooperation in early lifting of import restrictions on Japanese food products by the EU.
3. The two leaders confirmed that, in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, they would continue the strong sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine and that they would cooperate to support vulnerable countries food crisis caused by the aggression. The two leaders also shared the serious concern on North Korea’s nuclear and missile development and they confirmed again that they would continue to work closely together in dealing with the issues including the abductions issue.
