Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)
[Provisional Translation]
Q&As
- The situation in Ukraine and Japan-Russia relationship
(Abridged)
REPORTER: A similar question was asked during the morning press conference about the strengthening of sanctions by the United States and EU on Russia in response to the situation in Ukraine. What are your thoughts about the impacts this response could have on President Putin’s planned visit to Japan in the autumn?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: First, Japan's basic stance is to base our response on the current situation in Ukraine and to prioritize coordination with the G7.
Japan would like to play a diplomatic role towards resolving the situation in Ukraine, while also maintaining close communication with Russia. We would also like to move forward with the Japan-Russia bilateral relationship in a way that contributes to the national interests of Japan.
As for President Putin’s planned visit to Japan, nothing has been decided at the current point in time. I have frequently been asked this question these past few days and I have given the same answer each time. The Government will examine this matter based on a comprehensive consideration of various points.
REPORTER: On related note, my question is about President Putin’s planned visit to Japan. While the United States and the EU are strengthening their response, you noted just now that Japan will be working closely with the G7. Some people think President Putin’s visit will be a difficult proposition. Do you think there is still the possibility of a visit by President Putin?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Nothing has been decided on at the moment. I have repeatedly stated this. As of today nothing has been decided with regard to the visit.
