Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Q&As

  • The issue regarding the Japan-Australia economic partnership
  • The media report regarding Japan-North Korea directors-general informal talks

REPORTER: I have a question regarding the Japan-Australia economic partnership agreement (EPA) negotiations. It is reported that the two sides reached a broad agreement on reducing Japanese tariffs on Australian beef imports to between 20% and 30%. Perhaps you cannot say anything definitive as the negotiations are still ongoing. However, if Japan and Australia were to reach such an agreement, what kind of an impact do you think this would have on the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: First of all, it is as you just stated. During the Japan-Australia summit meeting that we will hold today, we are expecting to discuss how we can strengthen our bilateral economic relationship, including the matter of the Japan-Australia EPA. We are continuing to conduct earnest talks with the aim of concluding the Japan-Australia EPA at an early date. As we have yet to actually hold the summit meeting, at this moment in time I would like to refrain from speaking on what specific exchanges will take place regarding the Japan-Australia EPA during the meeting.

REPORTER: I understand that yesterday evening, Prime Minister Abe and Prime Minister Abbott had dinner together. On what themes did the two leaders exchange views? Also, I understand that Secretary General Yachi of the National Security Secretariat was present at the dinner. Did he discuss security in Asia at all?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I am aware that such a dinner was held but I am not aware of what was discussed. However, in any case, the Japan-Australia relationship is extremely important, and I presume that a variety of issues, including the economy and security, were naturally discussed.

REPORTER: Some parts of the media reported that over the past weekend, the Japanese and North Korean directors-general convened informal talks. Is this true?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I am aware that some parts of the media reported this. However, I would like to refrain from commenting on each and every media report.
