On November 12 for approximately 15 minutes from 6:00 p.m., Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda received a courtesy call from Her Excellency, Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women, who is currently visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Noda praised the steady results achieved by UN Women under the leadership of Executive Director Bachelet, and expressed his wish to continue close cooperation with the organization. Executive Director Bachelet expressed her gratitude for the support received from Japan for UN Women, and praised the Third Basic Plan for Gender Equality.
- Prime Minister Noda stressed the importance of UN Women's role in the social participation of women and women's empowerment. He explained that domestically as well, an action plan had been established toward promoting the starting of businesses by women and women's reemployment, and that initiatives were underway toward the plan's execution.
- In response, Executive Director Bachelet communicated that it was particularly important to carry out the Third Basic Plan for Gender Equality, and stated that there was room for the Japanese Government to undertake a variety of initiatives to promote women's participation in political and economic fields.
- Prime Minister Noda and Executive Director Bachelet shared the view that the social participation of women and women's empowerment were important issues and that they would continue to cooperate.
