Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reshuffled the Cabinet for his third administration.

An extraordinary Cabinet meeting for the collection of resignations was held at 3 p.m., and all Cabinet members resigned from their posts. Afterwards, a meeting among the heads of ruling parties was convened, and Mr. Shinzo Abe, the newly appointed Chief Cabinet Secretary, announced the list of the Cabinet members at a little after 4 p.m. Following this, each minister held a press conference in the press room at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. In the evening, the attestation ceremony of the Ministers of State was held at the Imperial Palace.

Prime Minister Koizumi held a press conference that night, in which he expressed his determination to further promote reforms, saying, "I reshuffled the members today, trying to put the right person in the right post. My wish is to advance without stopping the reforms that have been implemented to date, further stabilize the foundation of the LDP-New Komeito Party coalition and continue the reforms on the basis of this solid foundation. I would like to continue implementing the reforms with the cooperation of the people, accepting with due seriousness the mandate expressed by many that we should not stop reforms as well as with the strong support that many people extended in the last general election."

The first meeting of the new Cabinet took place after the press conference, followed by a commemorative photograph on the staircase of the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
