Prime Minister Naoto Kan attended the opening ceremony of the United Nations (UN) High-Level Meeting on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and delivered an address on September 24 (local time) in New York, where he attended a UN General Assembly meeting.

Later, Prime Minister Kan held talks with Mr. Sukhbaatar Batbold, Prime Minister of Mongolia, and with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In the afternoon, Prime Minister Kan delivered an address at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, in which he said, "Japan, as the only country that has ever suffered the devastation of atomic bombings, has the moral responsibility to take concrete steps to realize a world without nuclear weapons. Japan will be at the forefront of the international effort."

Afterwards, the Prime Minister held a press conference. Having completed his schedule for the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister then left New York for Japan.
