Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who was visiting the Italian Republic, held talks with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations. At the meeting, the two leaders exchanged opinions on major subjects on the agenda of the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit to be held this July, and confirmed that they will enhance coordination for the success of the G8 Summit. They also conducted a frank exchange of opinions on regional situations, including Myanmar.
Prime Minister Fukuda said that he intends to put a broad range of issues on the agenda of the G8 Summit, such as climate change, the world economy, Africa and development, and food prices. Referring to the climate change issue, the Prime Minister stated that the participation of countries such as China and India is important and that Japan, too, is making efforts. He also explained that technological innovation is essential for comprehensive volume restrictions and that Japan's sector-based approach has gained the basic understanding of the G8 nations.
To this, Secretary-General Ban said that he is encouraged by Japan's ambitious policy and that Japan should take on its historical and political responsibility for resolving the climate change issue. At the end of the meeting, Secretary-General Ban congratulated Prime Minister Fukuda for the successful conclusion of the 4th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), and said in Japanese, "I am looking forward to seeing you again in Tokyo and Hokkaido."
Afterwards, Prime Minister Fukuda held talks with Mr. Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
