Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama welcomed to the Prime Minister's Office the Hon. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, who was paying an official visit to Japan, and held a welcome ceremony. There the two leaders received the salute of a guard of honor.

Later, the Prime Minister held talks with Prime Minister Najib in the evening. Based on the strong ties between the peoples of Japan and Malaysia, which have been greatly strengthened with the implementation of the Look East Policy, the two leaders confirmed that the bilateral relationship was entering a new stage of enhanced partnership.

Prime Minister Hatoyama extended congratulations for the economic development of Malaysia under the leadership of Prime Minister Najib and expressed his gratitude for the support shown by Malaysia toward Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

After the meeting, the two leaders signed a Japan-Malaysia joint leaders' statement, "Enhanced Partnership for a New Frontier," following which the leaders held a joint press announcement.
