Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama attended the Japan-China-ROK Trilateral Summit Meeting in Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China.

Prime Minister Hatoyama first shook hands with the leaders of the other two countries participating in the Summit Meeting -- Mr. Wen Jiabao and Mr. Lee Myung-bak, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China and President of the Republic of Korea (ROK), respectively. The three leaders then attended the Japan-China-ROK Trilateral Summit Meeting.

During the Summit, the leaders agreed on the need for economic cooperation among the three countries. On climate change, they achieved an understanding that each work to protect the planet, sharing common objectives while respecting the differences among them.

Prime Minister Hatoyama proposed that what would be indispensable for trilateral cooperation was exchanges among the youth of the three countries, in particular those among university students, and that a meeting of eminent persons be held as part of this proposal. On the issue of North Korea, they agreed on the need to resume the Six-Party Talks and for the four nations of those present and the United States to cooperate to resolve the issue.

The leaders then held a joint press conference. Prime Minister Hatoyama said, "I consider it truly splendid that we also issued a Joint Statement on sustainable growth. Japan, China and the ROK account for 70 per cent of Asia's GDP. In light of this, I consider the advancement of cooperation among our three countries in an even more active manner to be indispensable for fostering the economies of East Asia and by extension the world as well as for cultivating peace. I truly appreciate that I could attend and take part in such a good exchange of views."

Later, the Prime Minister met with representatives of a business conference and held talks with Premier Wen.
