The vote to designate the Prime Minister took place at both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors in the afternoon of September 16. Mr. Yukio Hatoyama, a member of the House of Representatives, was designated as the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Hatoyama became the 93rd Prime Minister (the 60th person to assume the post) since Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Japan.

Immediately after the designation, Mr. Hatoyama formed a new Cabinet at the Prime Minister's Office.
