Mr. Shinzo Abe, a member of the House of Representatives, was appointed as the Prime Minister at plenary sessions of both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. Prime Minister Abe became the 90th Prime Minister (the 57th person to assume the post) since Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Japan.

After the appointment, Prime Minister Abe formed a new Cabinet at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. Afterwards, Mr. Yasuhisa Shiozaki, the Chief Cabinet Secretary, announced the list of Cabinet members.

In the evening, Prime Minister Abe attended the investiture of the Prime Minister and the attestation ceremony of the appointment of the Ministers of State at the Imperial Palace. Back at the Prime Minister's Official Residence, Prime Minister Abe held a press conference, the first Cabinet meeting, and a photo session with his new Cabinet members.

At the press conference, Prime Minister Abe referred to his new Cabinet by saying, "We will thoroughly run the government for each one of the Japanese people, for each one of the ordinary people, who work diligently every day, love their families, wish to enhance their local communities, and believe in the future of Japan. To this end today I formed the Cabinet for a Beautiful Nation." Prime Minister Abe further expressed his hope, saying, "I would like to make Japan a beautiful nation that will earn the trust and respect of the countries in the world and allow children to be proud of having been born in Japan."
