Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the Missile by North Korea
September 15, 2021
[Provisional Translation]
(On the missile launch by North Korea)
A short while ago, North Korea launched what are judged to be ballistic missiles.
This launch of ballistic missiles, the first in about six months since March 25 of this year, is outrageous, threating the peace and security of Japan and the region. The launch also violates United Nations Security Council resolutions. Japan has lodged a strong protest and strongly condemns this act. The missiles presumably landed in the Sea of Japan outside of our Exclusive Economic Zone. The Government will strengthen its surveillance and reconnaissance still further. In response to this incident, I have given instructions to make utmost efforts to gather and analyze relevant intelligence, to provide the public with prompt and accurate information, to thoroughly ensure the safety of aircraft and ships and to take all possible measures to prepare for unexpected contingencies. In addition, we will hold an emergency meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) later today.
We will closely cooperate with the United States, the Republic of Korea and other countries concerned to resolutely protect the lives and peaceful livelihoods of the citizens. Thank you.
