Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the Government Policy toward the Ruling by the Hiroshima High Court

July 26, 2021

[Provisional Translation]

(On the government policy toward the ruling by the Hiroshima High Court)

I have carefully considered this ruling, and as a result, I have concluded that 84 plaintiffs should be provided with relief, in accordance with the Atomic Bomb Survivors' Assistance Act and in going back to the spirit of the Act. Based on this idea, I decided not to file a final appeal. In addition, I would like to immediately issue Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificates to the plaintiffs. Furthermore, I intend to embark on discussions aimed at providing relief for those with similar circumstances.

Meanwhile, as the Government deems some parts of the ruling unacceptable, I would like to organize them into a statement. I gave instructions on my stance to Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Tamura and Minister of Justice Kamikawa and directed them to respond in line with it.

After this, I have an appointment with the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture and the Mayor of the City of Hiroshima. On this occasion, I would like to convey my stance to them, so that the Government, the Prefecture, and the City could closely work together to provide relief swiftly.
