Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the G7 Summit in Cornwall

June 13, 2021

[Provisional Translation]

(On the G7 Summit in Cornwall)

This was my first time to participate in the summit, but I believe that I was able not only to exchange candid views, but also clearly reflect the outcomes of discussions in the summit communique, specifically regarding the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), climate change, and what is more, economic recovery and competition with authoritarianism. While the international community is facing these challenges, the G7, which shares universal values, will lead an international order in the time to come. In addition, the G7 will aim to build economies and societies back better on various policy fronts, while at the same time striving to establish a free and open international order. We have decided such an overall course of action.

(On the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games)

With regard to the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, I gave an explanation on thorough implementation of preventive measures against infection as well as holding safe and secure Games and received very strong support from all the leaders. As the Prime Minister of the host country, I realized once again how encouraging such support was, and with the determination that we will hold successful Tokyo Games by any means, I renewed my resolve to start the Games properly and guide them to success.
