Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the Application of the Declaration of the State of Emergency to Okinawa Prefecture and Other Matters
May 21, 2021
[Provisional Translation]
(On the application of the declaration of a state of emergency to Okinawa Prefecture)
Okinawa Prefecture has seen a surge in infections especially among younger people. Against this backdrop, the availability of hospital beds remains under strain, and it was decided that the prefecture will be added to the areas covered by the declaration of the state of emergency and that it will be effective until June 20 to determine the impact of countermeasures, such as the prohibition on serving alcohol at dining and drinking establishments.
(On the extension of the declaration of the state of emergency in nine prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka)
First of all, we believe it is extremely important to implement all-out measures to prevent the spread of infections. We will observe the state of infections and then make a decision at the end of the month.
