Statement of the Prime Minister

September 16, 2020

Cabinet Decision
[Provisional Translation]

Today, I have been appointed as Prime Minister and, under the coalition with Komeito, assumed the heavy responsibility of steering the nation's administration.

From the formation of the Second Abe Cabinet to today, we have tackled important issues such as reviving the Japanese economy, restructuring diplomacy and national security, and materializing the social security system oriented to all generations. Since the beginning of this year, we have been dealing with the unprecedented emergency of the outbreaks of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Facing a national crisis of ongoing infections and still severe economic conditions, we must not allow a political vacuum to be created. I will carry on the initiatives implemented under the Abe administration and advance them further so as to overcome the current situation and bring back a daily life in which the public can enjoy peace of mind as early as possible.

"Self-help, mutual help, public help, and kizuna (bonds)" is our vision for society. With that in mind, we firmly believe, overcoming various issues, such as regional revitalization and the shrinking population, as well as the declining birthrate and aging society, will create dynamism in Japan. To this end, we will meet the people's expectations by giving birth to a "Cabinet that works for the People," which gives it all to advance regulatory reforms without being constrained by the vested interests of the stakeholders, tearing down bureaucratic sectionalism and the notorious habit of following past precedents.

We ask for the people's understanding and cooperation
