On July 10, 2020, the Prime Minister held the sixth meeting of the Emergency Headquarters for the Heavy Rain in July 2020 at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“The seasonal rain front still remains stationary and it is pouring heavily areas across the regions. As of today, the rescue and relief activities conducted by the respective units gathering from across the country to the disaster-affected areas have saved more than 2,300 people. I ask you to continue your utmost efforts to rescue people and provide relief, search for those missing, and extend support for residents of districts that are still isolated, among others.

We have assessed thus far the state of the damage caused by this disaster and it is expected that it will be designated as a ‘Disaster of Extreme Severity.’

In the city of Hitoyoshi, construction of temporary housing facilities will begin this weekend. As evacuations are expected to be prolonged, I also ask you to work expeditiously to secure housing for disaster victims.

We must resolve the power outages and water stoppages in the disaster-affected areas as soon as possible. In the Kyushu and Chubu regions, at the peak, more than 22,000 homes suffered power outages. As of today, this number has been reduced to a little over 2,000. With regard to water outages, at the peak, 21,000 homes suffered cutoffs of the water supply. As of today, this number has been reduced to little more than 4,800. I ask you to continue closely monitoring additional damages, which could be caused by the continued rainfall, and also make all-out efforts to resolve the power and water outages as soon as possible.

In the disaster-affected areas, it is forecasted that it will rain heavily over the weekend. As the river levels have already risen and the soil may have loosened in some places, it is necessary to maintain the utmost vigilance. I ask that you continue to do your utmost for the disaster victims, not only rescue and relief activities, but also recovery and reconstruction, without letting up on these efforts.”
