On June 22, 2020, the Prime Minister held the tenth meeting of the Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Council at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, there were reports on the outcomes of the verification of emergency response plans in the Onagawa area, and on the revision of the Manual for the Nuclear Disaster Countermeasures.

Following the reports, the Prime Minister said,

“The emergency response plans for the Onagawa area were approved today. For this area, which includes a peninsula and remote islands, we must secure multilayered means of evacuation to prepare for complex disasters. I would like to express my appreciation for the cooperation of Miyagi Prefecture, as well as the relevant municipalities and organizations, for the formulation of these emergency response plans.

There is no end to the work in disaster countermeasures. The Government will continue to work closely with the relevant local governments and business operators as we continuously verify and improve emergency response plans through training and other practices.

Furthermore, in view of the recent spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the emergency response plans have incorporated both measures to protect against exposure to radiation and also measures to prevent infections, such as by avoiding crowding and keeping people as dispersed as possible during evacuation. It is the Government’s important responsibility to be thoroughly prepared for emergencies, and to protect the lives, physical wellbeing, and property of the people. I ask the relevant ministers to continue to work together and take all possible nuclear disaster response measures.”
