[Provisional Translation]

On January 17, 2020, the Prime Minister held the 50th meeting of the Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, there was discussion on the draft plan for the lifting of evacuation orders in Futaba Town, Okuma Town, and Tomioka Town.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Today we decided to lift the evacuation orders for some of the areas in Futaba Town, Okuma Town, and Tomioka Town. This is the first decision of its kind to be made for the difficult-to-return zones.

In response to this, the JR Joban Line will at last resume full service on March 14.

On March 26, the Olympic Torch Relay will start from Hamadori. As transportation in Hamadori District will become more convenient, I hope that many more people will visit this area, including for sightseeing. I would like to utilize this opportunity to greatly accelerate the reconstruction of Fukushima.

It also includes the lifting of the evacuation orders to the Nakano District, which includes the industrial area, in Futaba Town. As 11 companies are scheduled to open their facilities, our reconstruction efforts enter a new stage.

Following this, I intend to implement various initiatives steadily with the Government working as one, closely working with the residents, such as decontamination and the development of infrastructure and living environment, towards the lifting of evacuation orders in the zones designated for reconstruction and recovery.

There will be no revitalization of Japan without the reconstruction of Fukushima. Under this overarching policy, I ask each and every Cabinet member to exert every effort towards the reconstruction and revitalization of Fukushima, by continuing to act with the mindset that they are all a Minister for Reconstruction, collaborating with each other and continuing to work on the frontline.”
