On December 23, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Regarding his visit to China and other matters, the Prime Minister said,

“While the Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) relationship is still facing the severe circumstances we recognize the importance of the coordination among Japan, the United States, and the ROK and between Japan and the ROK, taking into consideration the severe security environment in east Asia.

At the same time, it is necessary to honor the promises between the two countries. The Agreement on the Settlement of Problems concerning Property and Claims and on Economic Co-operation between Japan and the ROK was the premise for the normalization of the diplomatic relations between Japan and the ROK, and has served as the foundation for our relationship.

On this occasion, I am scheduled to hold a summit meeting with President Moon Jae-in,.I will firmly convey Japan’sviews to President Moon, including the issue of civilian workers from the Korean Peninsula.

Regarding your question about the bill submitted by National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang, I would like to refrain from making a comment on this bill as it concerns the deliberations in the legislature of another country. In any case, I hope that the ROK side will take action and create opportunities to make the Japan and the ROK relations sound.”
