Eastern Economic Forum and Other Events: Third Day
September 6, 2019
[Provisional Translation]
On September 6, 2019 (local time), Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is visiting Vladivostok in the Russian Federation to attend the fifth Eastern Economic Forum and other events, received a courtesy call from Mr. Giovanni Vincenzo Infantino, President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Following that, the Prime Minister met with people involved with Japanese businesses and others, and thereafter paid a visit to the memorial monument for Japanese nationals who died during detainment.
In his address at the meeting with people involved with Japanese businesses and others, the Prime Minister said,
“Good morning everyone. Thank you very much for joining us today.
While I have visited Vladivostok for four consecutive years and some of you are regular participants of this meeting, for first-time visitors, as I myself felt when I first visited here, Vladivostok is surprisingly much closer than we think. The vast lands of Eurasia are stretching from here, from the Far Eastern Region of Russia to Europe. As perseverance is power, the eight-point cooperation plan is, as I introduced at the forum yesterday, progressing towards materialization thanks to proactive efforts undertaken by all of you here.
In the Far Eastern region, we are seeing a talk moving forward between Marubeni and Russian Railways on the establishment of a Russian-Japanese health checkup and prevention center in Khabarovsk. In addition, a final investment decision has been made for the Arctic LNG 2 Project by the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC). Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and JOGMEC will participate in this project, which will soon deliver liquified natural gas (LNG) produced in the artic region to Japan via the Arctic Sea Route. Recently, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced that they will be starting regular flights between Tokyo and Vladivostok next year.
As I said earlier, I anticipate that the Far Eastern Region of Russia will become even closer to Japan in the future. Today, I am looking forward to hearing views from you, who are doing businesses on the ground in Russia.”
