[Provisional Translation]
On June 28, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is visiting Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, hosted the G20 Osaka Summit.
The Prime Minister held a meeting with the Honorable Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, followed by a meeting with U.S. President Trump and H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. Prime Minister Abe then held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, followed by a meeting with the Rt Hon Theresa May MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Afterwards, Prime Minister Abe held a pull aside talk with H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, on the margins of the group photo session.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister hosted the Leaders’ Special Event on Digital Economy, followed by the first session (working lunch), whose theme was the global economy, trade and investment.
In the late afternoon, Prime Minister Abe held talks with H.E. Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, followed by talks with H.E. Mr. Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, President of the Government of Spain. The Prime Minister then hosted the second session, whose theme was innovation (digital economy and artificial intelligence), followed by a meeting with H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand.
In the evening, the Prime Minister hosted the Cultural Program and Leaders’ Dinner.
The Prime Minister said in his address at the dinner,
“I would like to once again welcome you all to Osaka. Osaka was designated as the capital of Japan by Emperor Nintoku in around the 4th century and subsequently flourished as a city of commerce. Osaka Castle, an iconic symbol of Osaka, was first built in the 16th century. The entire stonewall and the Otemon Gate that your cars passed through date back to the beginning of the 17th century. While most of the Osaka Castle burnt down in the turmoil during the Meiji Restoration 150 years ago, the castle tower from the 16th century was restored faithfully around 90 years ago. However, they made one mistake: they also added elevators.
At this location with a close view of the Osaka Castle, three leading performers from Japan have just given performances of dance, music, and song for you all wholeheartedly.
As I suspect you are hungry, the shorter my remarks are the better. However, please allow me to explain our dinner just briefly. The concept of tonight’s dinner is ‘satoyama (village forests),’ based on the idea to integrate sustainability and gastronomy. For more information, please see the brochure in front of you.
We had a full day of work today, so I hope you will relax and enjoy your meal from now on. When I say ‘kanpai’ in Japanese, please raise your cup or glass without waiting for the interpretation. Since it is a flat cup and spills easily, I ask that you give a toast while remaining seated.
I would now like to propose a toast to the success of the G20 Osaka Summit, the peace and prosperity of the world, and the health and success of everyone here today. Kanpai.”
