On June 21, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the seventh meeting of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Promotion Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, there was discussion on the Expanded SDGs Action Plan 2019.

Based on the discussions, the Prime Minister said,

At the forthcoming G20 Osaka Summit to be held next week, it is important for Japan to present its own initiatives on major issues in the SDGs as the Presidency of the G20 (Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy). Towards a society where no one is left behind, there is a contribution that only Japan, the country which has proposed the ideal of human security to the international community, can make.

Today, the SDGs Promotion Headquarters has decided on three initiatives as our detailed contributions.

First, as an advanced country in disaster risk reduction, Japan will contribute to making the world more resilient, so that everyone can live with peace of mind despite the intensification of disasters. Japan will extend its support to at least five million people and others as Phase 2 of the Sendai Cooperation Initiative for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Second, we will provide assistance that saves the lives of one million people, for the sake of protecting individuals’ lives from the threats of infectious diseases. Furthermore, we will make contributions including the vaccinations of 1.3 million children.

Third, we will extend educational support to nine million people over three years, utilizing innovations, so that children and young people in developing countries can have access to quality education.

We will also advance our initiatives strongly such as quality infrastructure, marine plastic litter, climate change and the empowerment of women.

Based on the outcomes of the G20 Osaka Summit and the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7), which will be held in Yokohama this August, Japan will promote its SDGs model to the international community at the SDG Summit in September. In December, we will revise the SDGs Implementation Guiding Principles, based on the review of our efforts over the past four years since the adoption of the SDGs, and the efforts made by the international community.

I ask the relevant ministers to review the efforts of the respective ministries once again and strengthen these efforts both domestically and overseas as a strong promoter of the SDGs so as to make the Guiding Principles befitting of the new era of Reiwa.”
