On June 7, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 13th meeting of the Headquarters for the Promotion of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the “Report on the Status of Government Initiatives related to the Promotion of Preparation and Management for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games,” was approved. In addition, there were reports on “the Recent Initiatives towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games” and “the Status of Preparations for the Rugby World Cup 2019.”

Based on the approval and the reports at the meeting, the Prime Minister said,

“There is only one year left until the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games now. Test events for each sport will start shortly and preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games are entering the execution phase. We will work in close concert with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Organising Committee, and the relevant municipalities in our preparations, aiming at the world’s best Games.

In particular, our vision of ‘Recovery and Reconstruction Games’ is an important pillar of Tokyo 2020. Each and every Cabinet member shares the recognition that we are all a Minister for Reconstruction and the Government will work as one to proceed relevant measures.

Next March, the Olympic Torch Relay will start in Fukushima. I will visit Fukushima at that time and, together with communities in the disaster-affected regions, strongly promote to the world the progress of reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

We will also ensure that our work for Tokyo 2020, including the realization of an inclusive society and host town initiatives, are not merely short-lived; rather, we will create legacies that the next generation can be proud of, and actively promote them both in Japan and abroad.

This autumn, Japan will host the Rugby World Cup for the first time in its history. I intend to ensure that the World Cup is an absolute success, and create momentum for Tokyo 2020 in the following year. I want all members of the Cabinet to exert every effort to prepare for the success of these two events.”
