[Provisional Translation]

On May 28, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Mrs. Akie Abe visited JS Kaga in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture with the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, and Mrs. Melania Trump.

The Prime Minister said in his words of encouragement to members of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) and the U.S. Forces in Japan,

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to meet the brave men and women of the SDF and the U.S. Forces with President Trump today.

This is the very first time in history that the leaders of Japan and the United States are giving remarks to encourage the SDF and the U.S. Forces together. Under President Trump and myself, the Japan-U.S. Alliance has become more solid, ironclad even, than ever before. The fact that we are standing together on JS Kaga is the proof of that.

President Trump, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your friendship. I also wish to share joy together over the fact that the SDF and the U.S. Forces enjoy similarly deep bonds of friendship.

We must ensure that the Indo-Pacific is free and open and create the foundation of peace and prosperity in the region. All of us standing here fully share this unwavering resolve.

Last year, JS Kaga deepened its cooperation with the naval forces in the region across the vast waters extending from the Western Pacific to the Indian Ocean, closely collaborating with the U.S. Navy.

Going forward, we will revamp this vessel to equip it with short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) fighters, so that it will contribute further to the peace and stability of Japan and the region. Japan will firmly fulfill its role with a view to further strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance as a public good of the region. We will continue our persistent efforts to this end.

The ironclad Japan-U.S. Alliance is, first and foremost, underpinned by the efforts of each member of the SDF and U.S. Forces. Members of the SDF, I am proud of you, who protect the free and peaceful waters tirelessly, by day and by night.

Members of the U.S. Forces, who protect the peace and safety of Japan and the region, so far from your homeland, enhancing the deterrence of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, and your Commander-in-Chief, President Trump, I would also like to extend my respect and express my gratitude once again to all of you.

Amidst an increasingly severe regional security environment, I have high expectations for the members of the SDF and U.S. Forces, a bastion of peace and stability, that you will have even greater success in the future.”
