On December 13, 2017, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 41st meeting of the Education Rebuilding Implementation Council at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, discussion was held on the main points of debate related to the proposals to date.

The Prime Minister said in his address,

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to the members of this Council for engaging in such spirited discussions today, in spite of your busy schedules.

Children have unlimited potential. Only by receiving education are they able to blossom. We will help children to realize their maximum potential, enabling each of them to lead fulfilling lives. That is the role of education. The Government will fully meet this responsibility through our education reforms.

The Abe Cabinet is advancing productivity and human resources development, and tackling the challenge of achieving a major reform of Japan’s socioeconomic system with the aim of building a 100-year life society. To that end, on December 8 we compiled and announced an economic policy package that includes free education and higher education reform. The Government will work as one and move to swiftly implement this.

This Council has compiled as many as ten proposals up until now, such as reforming the board of education system and university entrance examinations, and has served as a driving force in Japan’s education reform. Based on the proposals, the Government will also conduct a thorough follow-up to ensure the education system is rebuilt in a way that values the individuality of each and every child, and will carry out these measures with a sense of urgency.

I would like all the distinguished experts of this Council to continue to offer your opinions from a wide range of viewpoints in regard to the Government’s education rebuilding initiatives. Thank you.”
