Recommendations on a Proposal to Revise the Electoral Districts for House of Representatives Members Elected from Single-Seat Constituencies
April 19, 2017
[Provisional Translation]
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received the Recommendations on a Proposal to Revise the Electoral Districts for House of Representatives Members Elected from Single-Seat Constituencies, at the Prime Minister's Office.
Based on the recommendations, the Prime Minister said,
"I have just received the Recommendations on a Proposal to Revise the Electoral Districts for House of Representatives Members Elected from Single-Seat Constituencies.
The members of the Council on the House of Representatives Electoral Districts have been holding discussions earnestly since the enactment of legislation related to reform of the House of Representatives' electoral system in May last year, and I would like to express my sincere respect and gratitude for their compilation of this proposal for revision.
This proposal for revision reduces disparity in the populations of electoral districts to below a two-fold difference over the next five years until the next review, and reduces by six the apportionment of seats of House of Representatives members elected from single-seat constituencies. I surmise that the work had been extraordinarily challenging.
The Cabinet will report the recommendations immediately to the Diet, and will swiftly take legislative measures based on the recommendations.
I would like to request your continued support and cooperation. Thank you."
