Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the fourth meeting of the Ministerial Council on the Response to Infectious Diseases that Pose a Threat to Global Society, at the Prime Minister’s Office.
At the meeting, a discussion was held on the draft of the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Measures Action Plan , and a report was given on Further Measures Related to the Zika Virus Infectious Disease.
Based on the discussion and the report given at the meeting, the Prime Minister said,
“In regard to the issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is growing into a global threat, Japan has determined our first action plan.
We will advance effective measures for both humans and animals, by developing a national movement to thoroughly implement the use of both ‘appropriate drugs’ and ‘appropriate dosages and periods of use’ among other initiatives.
Moreover, as the chair country of the G7 Summit, Japan will lead the advancement of international measures such as by supporting the formulation of action plans for AMR measures in developing countries.
The Zika virus infectious disease is transmitted through mosquitoes. As well as preparing for the summer season, when there are many mosquitoes, it is also necessary to strengthen preparations in advance of the holding of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
We will develop a national movement through such initiatives as intensive public relations and widespread education, with June designated as the Public Relations Enhancement Month .
Moreover, we will establish a nationwide network for counselling pregnant women, such as by telephone.
I request that all relevant ministers collaborate closely to steadily advance the relevant measures. Thank you very much.”
