“Beauty of Japan” Comprehensive Project Advisory Panel
October 13, 2015
[Provisional Translation]
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the first meeting of the “Beauty of Japan” Comprehensive Project Advisory Panel at the Prime Minister's Office.
The Prime Minister said in his opening address,
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your participation in this first meeting of the “Beauty of Japan” Comprehensive Project Advisory Panel today, in spite of your busy schedules.
Japan has culture and arts in which we can take pride before the rest of the world, including ancient artworks such as statues of Buddha, traditional arts such as kabuki, as well as traditional crafts, Japanese cuisine, and the tea ceremony. Furthermore, in recent years, Japanese films and animation have also received worldwide acclaim.
I have often heard from Mr. Tsugawa, the chair of today’s meeting, that Japan should endeavor to communicate to the world more about Japan’s wonderful culture and arts, and to utilize them to the fullest in diplomacy.
Culture and arts are the foundation of Japan’s soft power. In order for Japan to increase its presence in the international community, I believe there is a need to actively develop “cultural diplomacy” that communicates the appeal of Japan’s culture and arts.
All of you gathered here today are closely involved in Japanese culture and arts, and will hold discussions on their promotion, preservation and transmission to the next generation, as well as measures to increase their appeal within Japan.
I would like all members to share your frank opinions, from each of your respective specialized viewpoints, and to conduct a lively discussion. Thank you very much.”
