Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 12th meeting of the Headquarters for Ocean Policy at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, there was discussion on the revision of “Basic Policy concerning Preservation and Management of Islands for Management of the Sea” and on the holding of celebrations for the 20th “Marine Day.”
Based on the discussions, the Prime Minister said,
“As a maritime nation, the maintenance of jurisdiction over our territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) through the preservation and management of islands for management of the sea makes a major contribution to the preservation and development of the public’s daily lives and economic activities.
For that reason, based on the final proposal of the advisory council in June of this year, we will collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies aiming to carry out the reform of the Basic Policy within this fiscal year. Centering on Minister Yamatani, I would like each relevant ministry and agency to collaborate on this and make a thorough response to this issue.
In addition, next year marks the 20th year since the establishment of Marine Day (July 20). I want the relevant ministries and agencies to work together to ensure the further deepening of public understanding and interest in the oceans. Thank you very much.”
