Friday, April 25, 2014
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe invited Japanese prize winners from the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the Prime Minister’s Office and held a ceremony to award them with commemorative gifts for their achievements.
Japanese athletes won a total of eight medals, including one gold medal, at the Sochi 2014 Olympics held for 18 days from February 6 to 23, 2014. In addition, Japanese athletes also won a total of six medals, including three gold medals, at the Sochi 2014 Paralympics held for 10 days from March 7 to 16, 2014.
During the ceremony Prime Minister Abe awarded the athletes with commemorative gifts and said in his address,
“Congratulations to our medalists and other prize-winning athletes. When I see your faces here today it brings back thrilling memories from your competitions. Each of you truly did your best as representatives of Japan, and as a result of your efforts you either won a medal or other prize. I believe you all produced wonderful accomplishments.
The sight of our athletes giving everything they have, doing their best despite challenging conditions, and winning medals and standing proudly before the raised Japanese flag moved the Japanese public and filled us with a sense of courage. On behalf of the people of Japan I would like to once again express my appreciation for all your efforts.”
