Statement by Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae
February 18, 2026
[Provisional translation]
Following the results of the recent general election, today I once again assumed the heavy responsibility of the office of Prime Minister. Advocating policies that include “responsible and proactive public finances” and the strengthening of our security policy and the nation's intelligence capabilities, I was granted a strong mandate from the people. Bolstered by a strong and unwavering belief in the latent power of Japan and the Japanese people, I will dedicate myself completely to making the Japanese archipelago stronger and more prosperous.
I will strive to build a strong economy, turning people's unease and apprehension over their current lives and the future into hope, and I will deal with the challenges facing the international community, fostering strong diplomacy and robust security. For the many young people and children of the present day who will carry Japan into the twenty-second century, I will work resolutely to ensure that a safe and prosperous Japan serves as a bright beacon in the Indo-Pacific so that Japan will be counted on as a nation of freedom and democracy.
I ask the Japanese people for their understanding and cooperation as I take these responsibilities upon myself.
