[Provisional translation]

Dr. SAKAGUCHI Shimon, Specially Appointed Professor at the University of Osaka, has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

I was truly pleased to learn that Professor Sakaguchi has been honored with this prestigious award and I express my heartfelt respect for his achievements.

This award reflects the high acclaim given worldwide for his achievements related to elucidating the mechanisms of peripheral immune tolerance through the discovery of regulatory T cells.

I take great pride in the fact that this discovery of truth, achieved through the creative ideas of a Japanese researcher, has greatly contributed to the continued progress of humankind and has been recognized by the international community.

The Government of Japan will work to stimulate innovation in all fields by firmly supporting creative and diverse research and strongly promoting the training and fostering of researchers.
