Press Conference by Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru Regarding U.S. Tariff Measures
July 8, 2025
[Provisional translation]
(On how Prime Minister Ishiba assesses the fact that seven rounds of ministerial-level negotiations have not resulted in the elimination of tariffs, and where responsibility lies)
The Japanese Government is determined to avoid easy compromises. We will spare no effort as we pursue these negotiations, requesting what should be requested and protecting what should be protected.
The consultations thus far have resulted in an extension of the deadline. As we work towards the new deadline of August 1, Japan will hold consultations with the United States and aim to arrive at an agreement that protects our national interests while benefiting both Japan and the U.S.
Effects will be felt in our domestic industries and employment, among other areas. We will do everything within our means to dampen the repercussions of this turn of events. The Government will continue to work in unison as we engage in these negotiations. That is all.
