G7 Apulia Summit Side Event on PGII (Summary)

On June 13, commencing at 5:40 p.m. (local time; 12:40 a.m., June 14, JST), Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, attended the G7 Apulia Summit Side-Event on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), for approximately 55 minutes. This side event was jointly held by Italy, the G7 Presidency, and the United States, and was attended by the leaders of the G7, including Japan, Canada, Germany and European Commission, participants from the private sector, the President of the World Bank, and the President of the African Development Bank.

At the side-event, each country introduced their respective initiatives to strengthen connectivity in Africa and expressed their expectations for the promotion of infrastructure investment, including private capital, under the PGII. Prime Minister Kishida introduced Japan’s initiatives for strengthening connectivity in Africa and Asia and announced that Japan will continue to support Africa’s growth through quality infrastructure so as to be able to link the outcomes of the PGII to TICAD 9, which is scheduled to be held next summer.
