On April 13, 2023, Prime Minister Kishida attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the 2025 Japan World Expo.

Prime Minister Kishida said in his address,

“Today, on the milestone occasion with two years to go before the opening of the 2025 Japan World Expo, I am greatly delighted to announce to you that His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Akishino has assumed Honorary President of the expo. On this day of celebration, I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on the groundbreaking for the venue of the 2025 Japan World Expo.

I believe that many of you remember like yesterday the sense of excitement that the 1970 Osaka Expo, which is Japan’s first expo, brought to people across the country with the Tower of the Sun and the lunar rock. The expo was a truly historic event that powerfully showed the development of Japan worldwide and served as a catalyst for its progress in science and technology and economic growth.

And in the upcoming year of 2025, an expo will take place again here in Osaka.

The theme for this expo is ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives.’ As a series of precisely epoch-making events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical upheavals, and the global energy crisis, have been occurring, people hold high expectations for the expo, which faces our lives.

We hope to host an expo of the new century that will attract many people both from across Japan and from abroad and exceed the 1970 expo. We will do everything in our power to further increase momentum over the next two years. As part of such efforts, we have decided to issue a series of coins to commemorate the expo. This year we will start with the issuance of silver coins with the design of the expo venue here in Yumeshima and the event’s logo mark.

We intend to continue to make preparations and foster momentum on a government-wide basis, in collaboration with the relevant municipalities and the business community, toward the success of the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Let me conclude my celebratory remarks by sincerely wishing that the Osaka-Kansai Expo will bring hope for future society."
