On December 24, 2021, the Prime Minister held the 11th meeting of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Promotion Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.
At the meeting, the participants engaged in discussions on the SDGs Action Plan 2022 and the winners of the fifth Japan SDGs Award.
Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,
“Addressing economic, social, and environmental issues in a comprehensive manner, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an important compass for overcoming the unprecedented crises of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and climate crisis.
Meanwhile, a new form of capitalism is aimed at correcting the harmful effects of capitalism, creating a sustainable society and economy, and making a solution of social challenges as a new source of growth. Hence, it is an initiative that also leads to the achievement of the SDGs.
Rather than leaving everything to markets and competition, we will embed a mechanism to rectify market failure and external diseconomies into capitalism through both growth and distribution strategies, thereby maximizing benefits that capitalism brings about.
Through these activities, we will realize a new form of capitalism that creates a sustainable economy through a virtuous cycle of growth and distribution before others and lead efforts to take on the challenge facing our world and times: the achievement of the SDGs.
I ask the relevant ministers to steadily implement the latest action plan decided based on such concept and to realize a new society in which all people find life worth living.”
